The First Horror is a really solid kick-off to the trilogy。 It also works really well as a stand-alone novel, and I almost wish that it was。 There were some genuinely creepy and brutal moments。 It definitely scared me as a kid。 I had forgotten the order of things, but I had very distinct memories of several of the scenes。 I think this might be where my fear of rats originated from。 The sibling rivalry between Cally and Kody worked really well。 It played nicely into the strange things happening a The First Horror is a really solid kick-off to the trilogy。 It also works really well as a stand-alone novel, and I almost wish that it was。 There were some genuinely creepy and brutal moments。 It definitely scared me as a kid。 I had forgotten the order of things, but I had very distinct memories of several of the scenes。 I think this might be where my fear of rats originated from。 The sibling rivalry between Cally and Kody worked really well。 It played nicely into the strange things happening around them。 For the most part, this was a pretty standard haunted house story。 It had some really good moments that made it stand out (namely what happened to James) but it fell short of being something truly unique。 One of the more frustrating things about Stine is that he rarely gives his villains compelling motives, and the house in 99 Fear Street is no different。 It’s evil for the sake of being evil, but I want to know what it wants。 This is forgivable to an extent since this is just the first of three books, but that means the next two need to raise the stakes and deliver。 I have a sinking feeling that they won’t。Score: 4For a deep-dive review with memes, spoilers, and snark, check out my blog!Blog Review I Instagram I Twitter 。。。more

The Frasiers are excited to move into their new house on Fear Street after living in a small apartment。 Twin sisters Cally and Kody can finally have their own bedrooms。 Plus their little brother, James, can even get a dog。 However, a string of accidents and the house's dark history soon turns their happiness to horror。 What an introduction to 99 Fear Street。 This was a haunted house story done right。 With grisly accidents, angry rats and ghosts, there really was a little bit of everything。 I don The Frasiers are excited to move into their new house on Fear Street after living in a small apartment。 Twin sisters Cally and Kody can finally have their own bedrooms。 Plus their little brother, James, can even get a dog。 However, a string of accidents and the house's dark history soon turns their happiness to horror。 What an introduction to 99 Fear Street。 This was a haunted house story done right。 With grisly accidents, angry rats and ghosts, there really was a little bit of everything。 I don't remember reading this one as a kid, but it definitely would've creeped me out back then。 I'm very much looking forward to reading The Second Horror。 。。。more

I read this book as a kid and it holds up。 Is the dialogue great? No, but I didn’t read this for some kind of literary classic。 I read this because I watched the Fear Street movie and had to reread these。 Major kudos for a really dark ending。

⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ Critical Score: B+Personal Score: A-Reading Experience: 📘📘📘📘📘This was loads of fun。 Is it exactly what you’d expect for a haunted house story? Basically。 But it’s well done and ultimately brutal。 Super easy and fun。 Often creepy and sometimes shocking。 If you’re looking for an Amityville horror vibe, you could do way worse。

I didn’t read the Fear Street books as a kid, so I don’t have fond memories of them。 After watching the Fear Street movies, though, I had to know if the books were any good。My rating for this book is 3。5 stars。 The story is good, and I liked that it had some inventive scenes。 The repetitive dialogue wasn’t so good, nor were the constant -ly dialogue tags。Overall, Stine had a good premise。 Some scenes were gorier than I expected (yay!) but they were always toned down。 I can see how pre-teens beca I didn’t read the Fear Street books as a kid, so I don’t have fond memories of them。 After watching the Fear Street movies, though, I had to know if the books were any good。My rating for this book is 3。5 stars。 The story is good, and I liked that it had some inventive scenes。 The repetitive dialogue wasn’t so good, nor were the constant -ly dialogue tags。Overall, Stine had a good premise。 Some scenes were gorier than I expected (yay!) but they were always toned down。 I can see how pre-teens became so addicted to this series, although it’s probably not going to make adults like me read any further。 。。。more

“‘None of us is getting out of here alive…’” This is definitely one of the better Fear Street books。 The First Horror gives us the origin of 99 Fear Street, as the recently moved-in Frasier family is terrorized。 The scares are creepy and classic and have Amityville vibes。 The whole family is slowly driven to madness, death, and despair (poor Cubby)。This is a classic and I’m glad I reread it。

Wow。 This was a great "Fear Street" entry and the trilogy itself had a lot of good plot points, though book #3 was a letdown and didn't even make any sense。 Books #1 and 2 were 5 stars in my opinion。 "The First Horror" follows the family that moves into 99 Fear Street。 Cally, Kody, their younger brother, and their parents move into 99 Fear Street。 Right away Cally realizes something is off about the house。 It's dark there no matter what and they have rats that come out of nowhere and start attac Wow。 This was a great "Fear Street" entry and the trilogy itself had a lot of good plot points, though book #3 was a letdown and didn't even make any sense。 Books #1 and 2 were 5 stars in my opinion。 "The First Horror" follows the family that moves into 99 Fear Street。 Cally, Kody, their younger brother, and their parents move into 99 Fear Street。 Right away Cally realizes something is off about the house。 It's dark there no matter what and they have rats that come out of nowhere and start attacking the family。 (Look if rats showed up day 1, I would have bounced)。 When other mysterious accidents start happening, Cally and her twin Kody start to wonder if the house is haunted。 When the past of 99 Fear Street is revealed though, only some people get out alive。This was dark for a "Fear Street" book I have to say。 I also have to say, after watching the newest offering by Netflix, they could have done this trilogy instead of whatever that slasher homage was that they released last week。 Cally is a great character to follow and it's heartbreaking to read about what happens to the family as they start to realize that the house is not what it seems to be。 This book also ties together Simon and Angelica Fear a bit too which long-time readers know about from other books in the series。 。。。more

I loved this specific Fear Street series as a kid。 Rereading it as a 28-year-old wasn't quite the same thrilling experience, but I still had fun。 I loved this specific Fear Street series as a kid。 Rereading it as a 28-year-old wasn't quite the same thrilling experience, but I still had fun。 。。。more

To be honest I love R。L。 Stine but this was not my favorite book。 I thought the storyline was okay but I didn't like what the family goes through and how much pain the ending portrays。 The ending definitely leaves your surprised and a little upset by the shock of it。 If you like horror and suspense then you will definitely like this story。 To be honest I love R。L。 Stine but this was not my favorite book。 I thought the storyline was okay but I didn't like what the family goes through and how much pain the ending portrays。 The ending definitely leaves your surprised and a little upset by the shock of it。 If you like horror and suspense then you will definitely like this story。 。。。more

I last read this in 5th or 6th grade and it has really aged well。 Graphic, horrifying, and scary with an an unexpectedly lucid and dark ending that ties the true horror of the house together as well as building on the dark Fear Street history and mythology。 Will definitely be reading part 2 soon!
